I am fashion designer by trade, and fashion makes me sick.
Don’t get me wrong, I love clothes and shoes and style and all that jazz. What makes me sick about fashion is that makes girls hate themselves. What ideal body looks like, has changed so much over last couple of decades. If a girl does not fit into a specific body type deemed desirable at the time, then screw her, no pretty clothes for her. And it has been like that since forever
One night I was hanging out with group of my girls. We all whined and moaned about how big our asses are, how thick our thighs are, how much our tummies stick out, and so on…
I looked around a room and looked at my friends. What I saw was bunch of really beautiful girls not hideous monsters we were talking about.
What drives females to look at themselves from such a bad angle?
Answer is, simply, fashion. In the 30’s we whined about being too skinny, in the 50’s that our boobs aren’t pointy enough, in the 00’s we lost the compass completely and tried hard to look like junkies. And now, we whine about everything. In this era of heavily photoshoped commercials and magazines, when all the bodies and faces we see are completely perfect, we feel ugly.
And because we feel so ugly, we buy stuff that we believe will make us less ugly. Creams, lotions, serums, shoes, clothes, pills… You name it. And companies are making billions out of our insecurities.
Since something needs to be done about this shit, I decided to make a little experiment. I started with me as a first, fashion guinea pig, and hope more girls will join me along the way.
Here how it works:
Go home and get naked
Stand in front of a full length mirror
Take a book or a website about fashion history
Look only at 20th century
Now, compare your body type with ideal body types trough the whole 20th century
Which one is closest to yours?
I decided my body is closest to fifties ideal body image, so I went out and started looking for clothes that resemble fifties fashion.
I have been doing this for few months now, and I like it. I feel better about myself and how I look.
If you decide to do this, do it for yourself, be honest to yourself and embrace who you are.
The goal is to feel pretty, feel good and enjoy fashion and life.
